China-Built Mombasa-Nairobi railway is hitting new success

(MENAFN) Kenya’s Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), constructed with Chinese support, has achieved 3,000 days of safe operation as of Saturday, according to reports.

Since opening on May 31, 2017, the railway has carried nearly 15.93 million passengers and moved over 41.96 million tons of cargo, according to the company responsible for its operation and maintenance, Africa Star Railway Operation Company Limited (Afristar).

Spanning 472 km from the coastal city of Mombasa to the capital Nairobi, the SGR is the first new railway constructed in Kenya since independence and serves as a flagship project under the China-Kenya Belt and Road Initiative.

Designed, built, and operated by China Road and Bridge Corporation, the railway was constructed to Chinese standards using Chinese technologies, equipment, and management practices. Afristar highlighted that the line has enhanced Kenya’s transport efficiency and contributed to a 1.5 percent increase in the country’s GDP.
